Just completed my first Stock Refinish, a Marlin 1894. Original stock had major clear coat scratches and one gouge.
Complete strip, iron sweat the dents, gouge filled using sanding dust and glue, sand, 4 coats of sanded in Boiled Linseed Oil to fill pores, then 2 final coats.

Water Base stripper, deactivate with water. I just gently brushed down wood under running water.
It does take 3 or 4 applications. But no harsh fumes and indoor safe.

Thanks, it exceeded my expectations. And that is no stain, stripped and oiled.
You have to be patient, took 6-months. The more coats the longer it takes to dry.
The last two coats took 2 months each to dry. But this method seals all the pores
with oil and should repel water and preserve the wood.
