Personal Defense Weapon?

Wondering why you didn't go with a different caliber than 5.56 with a 6" barrel... You lose sooooo much velocity that way, and high velocity is what makes that tiny bullet effective to begin with... Plus, if you ever had to use that gun indoors... the flame and noise... you better double up on hearing protection or you will risk permanent hearing loss with every single shot.

If I was to do an AR that short, it would be in 9mm, .45ACP or .300Blk...

It looks cool and all, but I wouldn't want a 5.56 that short... Sorta defeats the purpose, IMHO.

Running the numbers, you are pushing less than 500ft/lbs of energy with that setup... You get all the noise and fire and bad parts of the equation, but you don't get much power out of it... A 9mm+P out of a 6" barrel would offer about the same power, but cheaper, lot less noisy, no blinding flash, etc...

I agree.

fwiw, I’m expecting ~1200fps with 124 grain JHP out of my 8.7” 9mm i posted. That comes out to ~400lb/ft

Because it’s cool ‍♂️. I don’t have to worry about any different magazines, just grab any AR mag I have. Besides the hearing loss, the noise and flash are a plus as far as I’m concerned for disorientation of the bad guy. The pistol should still turn out 1800-2200 FPS, way underrated for the round, but plenty enough to do the job. In fact, better for the intended purpose, as you have to worry less about over penetration. Mainly what I’m saying is, I’m using all these reasons to build a short 5.56 because I wanted the shortest, loudest, most absolutely impractical thing I could build, especially after seeing Springfield come out with something similar. The likelihood of me ever having to use it for self defense vs fun is slim to none, and honestly probably won’t be my go to anyways.

It's your deal so do what you want... For anything I would consider going to for defense... I want it to be practical, not compromised... I want it efficient. For the same size, I could build a pistol caliber that would give me comparable energy, larger diameter wound, cheaper to run, likely more reliable, and not pose a danger to myself. Meaning, hearing. I don't know that being woken from a sound sleep, I would have the time to properly fit earplugs and stuff.

Have you ever shot an AR that short? I have. it SUCKED. lol

It was like a flash bang going off in MY face, and so I tossed that 7" barrel and got a longer one with a flash can to make it bearable. And that was with proper eye and ear protection... haha
