On vacation outside Ashville and hiking up near number 6 falls, very steep trail and found a smart phone. Appears battery is dead. Has hard case son not sure of brand (not an iPhone). Any ideas on how to get back to owner or post on a list found?

Charge it, see if it has porn on it.(or pics of somebody you know)
Charge it and call 1st person on call list and tell them you have found this found and could they help you find the owner
Callong last number with a name in call log is what I did with the one I found at the beach. Took about 1 hour for owner to call the phone and get address to pick it up.
If it's been lost a few days, it my have had the service disconnected.
When my grandson lost his, we had it locked down within a few hours. He had left it on the rear bumper of his Mom's SUV and she had drove off not knowing. LOL

I suppose it didnt belong to the dead person that was laying next to it? 
You never know..........so turn it in to the nearest police precinct or wipe your fingerprints off it before you dispose of itI suppose it didnt belong to the dead person that was laying next to it?

I suggest charging it, if you can, for a few hours. Then:
1- Take it to your local Verizon store and see if they can check that phone by serial number and match it to one of their customers.
2-- If Verizon doesn't know anything about it, take it to AT&T or Sprint or one of the other big mobile phone stores. Have them check it to see if it's one of their customers.
3-- If none of that works, I would write up a cover letter (which serves as a sort of incident report to finding the phone) and then mail that letter along with the phone itself to the Sheriff of whatever county it was found in.
