Getting in shape for summer... who's in?

Great to hear it man. What is your favorite workout?

I made a set of "ballistic ropes" (battle ropes) and they will flat out kick your ass after a few minutes.

Well my favorite workout is a bit out of my range right now. I need to get into better shape. Do three sets of a specific exercise then jump on the treadmill and sprint hard for 30 seconds. Then go do another exercise and hop back on the treadmill for another 30 seconds. It has to be hard sprinting though. Getting your HR up to about 80-90% of max HR. It will kick your butt and help you increase your calorie burn during workouts, as well as your EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption). EPOC is a metabolic factor that is largely affected by working out. It's really my own variation of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) mixed in with weights.

I'm doing good so far this year. Last January I only got 4 rides in, but this January I have 10 so far and should hit 12 by the end of the month. It's really hard to make yourself go ride when it below 40, especially carrying a 40. lol Not really, I only carry a 380 when I ride and a can of pepper spray.

Obviously you know this but so many people seem to have no clue. 80-90% is anaerobic. As such, your body is not getting enough oxygen to convert fat stores to energy and will use muscle instead. It's a quick way to lose muscle mass if not done properly. I see so many people getting back in to the gym and hitting the treadmill or elliptical and pushing themselves to that max point. They think they are dropping body fat but they are really just making themselves weaker.

Both have their place but anaerobic should be a small part of a balanced workout for most people.

Yes, the key phrase is if you do it correctly. Anaerobic workouts don't burn as many calories during the workout, but they increase your EPOC quite well. And it helps keep your HR up pretty decently between each exercise. This type of HIIT training is definitely an ADVANCED program. That's why it's out of my range right now lol. It works wonders when I get to that point though.

Well I don't really want to lose body weight. I just want to lose body fat and replace that with muscle. I'm not fitting into pants the way I used to and I don't like it. It's time for me to stop being a has-been.

Honestly man, You're best bet is to choose one or the other and concentrate on that. To lose the fat you will need to be in a deficit, but to gain the muscle you will have the best results in an excess of good calories. There are ways to do both but it can be a lot of work.

I disagree about having to be hungry. I have been eating a lot of food. There are a lot of extremely filling and healthy foods that have very few calories by volume. I have MFP set at 1750 calories per day, I eat all day and am lucky to hit 1500 calories. The exercise really cuts it at that point. One 45min Spin class kills 800+ calories.

Most people (myself included) are really hungry on 1500 calories a day.

when I lost the 40 pounds in 2006/2007 I was also running stupid distances. Can't do that anymore due to a degenerating (or degenerate) hip.

Can't do much of anything at a higher plane than standard bench press because of an impingement in the left shoulder and a torn rotator cuff in the right (which I hope to get fixed this year).

Getting old SUCKS and I'm not even old.
