Hell tell him to go to the range, load a magazine, point at a target, pull the trigger (if he hasn't already shot himself in the leg by then), lower the weapon and place it in a safe place, start looking around for a spent case on the floor/ground!
wa-la he has his spent case.
actually all my guns that did come with a spent case I used to reload later on.
