Welcome! I agree with some of the others a carry permit, pistol, and practice practice practice would serve you better as a single gun owner until you get around to buying your second.

Step 1: Take a firearm safety course, the longer / more in-depth, the better!
Step 2: Go rent a bunch of different hand guns, buy based upon what you shoot best (I agree with WMS, pistol first to cover all the bases.)
Step 3: Get your GWL/GWCL
Step 4: practice, practice, practice
