I recently picked up some metal targets from a fellow ODT member. These will be hanging from heavy rubber straps and will be slightly angled or leaning forward.
How safe is it to fire FMJ at these targets?

Safe, as long as you have them angled properly. I shoot my plates from a distance of at least 10 yards.

I have several 1/4" and 3/8" AR500 plates and have shot them thousands of times with 9mm up to .357 mag. They have held up well. I hit them with a little cheap spray paint and I'm good to go.

Thanks. I'm being very careful with setting them up. They will be both angled and able to swing back on impact.

I still have a couple hanging on "shepherd's hooks" I picked up at Home Depot. Not really angled, but they hang/swing freely and haven't given me any problems.

You can't beat the ring of steel!

Biggest issue with steel plates is using ammo that is too fast. 223 seems to be the worst as it takes 2850 fps to pit most plates if used up close. The light plates are usually 22 and 9mm only. Get a couple cans of spray paint and a magnum sharpie and have fun.
