HB 26 - Georgia Constitutional Carry Act of 2013

Will there still be a piece of paper or id you can still buy I travel a lot and carry in every legal state I can so I would want some sort of id

I would imagine that actual permitting would still be available. Obviously that would be needed to carry in other states. Just because GA may not care if your permitted or not doesnt mean other states wouldnt.
The actual permit just wouldnt be required to carry in this one.

Go Georgia. I dont know how the CCW thing ever happened anyway. Sounds plain enough on the big paper that you have the right to keep and bear arms...You need a license to practice Constitutional rights?

It stared way back when, It was a racial deal meant to keep guns out of rebeling blacks by making it unafforable for them to own one

What about reciprocity with other states?

This is the real question. I certainly agree with the right to carry without a government document. However, I want to be able to carry in other states. I can do this now since I have a Georgia concealed weapons permit.

They need to sort that part out.

See above.
You would still need a permit to carry ELSEWHERE.

I can't find anything in the bill that explicitly states or implies that the Georgia carry permit would be amended or repealed. It doesn't appear make any changes to 16-11-129 (This is the section that addresses weapons licensing in GA code). In fact, there IS language in the bill implying that carry permits will still be available. For example, lines 68-71 of the bill state:

"(2.1) 'Lawful weapons carrier' means any person who is not prohibited by law from possessing a weapon or long gun, any person who is licensed pursuant to Code section 16-22-129, or any person licensed to carry a handgun or weapon in any other state whose laws recognize and give effect to a license issued pursuant to this part.
(3) 'License holder' means a person who holds a valid weapons carry license."

I'm pretty sure the current carry license will still be issued to those who want it, just not required for concealed or open carry within the state.
I'm really hoping we can pass it this year. Write your representatives!

Let me be the devil's advocate. As it is now, in order to open carry, you have to have a conceal permit. It would make me feel better that when I see someone open carrying, at least I know he or she has been checked by the FBI and GBI. If that requirement is repealed, anyone can open carry without any background check.

In a shots fired situation, I'd like to be able to tell the good guys from the bad guys.

We, on here, tend to look at this as law abiding citizens. However, criminals will exploit any opportunity. Right now, thugs don't open carry to avoid bringing attention to themselves.

This point was made to me by a LEO I shoot with at our club. I thought his take on the matter made good sense.

Just trying to look at both sides of the issue.

Musket I understand your point of view but criminals don't care anyway. This mentallity is why we have these infringements on our rights now. The only people affected by this way of thinking are the law abiding gun owners. In a shots fired situation LEO is going to disarm ANYONE carrying a firearm, law abiding or not. LEO will know what to look for.......the guy running down the street! The law abiding citizen is going to be standing still.
