Here we go: 9mm vs. .45 ACP

My only reason for owning a 9 or two,is that,in the event of a major "event"in the US,9mm ammo is more universal and prevalent.ie,easier to come by.I think all of us started out by carrying cannons, soon got tired of `em,and now we have the deluge of pocket pistols.I like a big gun in the truck and a little`un in my pocket, unless I`m going somewhere that I know I might want some big medicine.Actually,it`s a bother to carry a gun,but I always do.I wish the world was different. It`s like the fire extinguisher in my kitchen.Hope I never need it,but if I do,I want it reachable, and ready to go.Facts are facts, though, the .45 speaks for itself.I like both.

I agree with the availability of 9mm arguement, even though 45 auto seems to be a increasingly prevailant caliber. I've owned both calibers and liked both for their pros and cons. However, this being the stupid arguements forum as mentioned before, I personally prefer the 45 and at this time all my handguns are 45.

I own both. I carry both (not at the same time, before you say it). I prefer the .45 hands down. To me, the arguement for higher capacity in the 9mm is BS. I HIT WHAT I SHOOT AT. If 8 rds won't do it I was screwed before I got started.
I asked a good friend of mine who works at the local Sheriff's Dept. He put it really simply. "Ask the prisoners. There are plenty of them who have been shot with a 9mm. Won't find many who survived a .45 though". That answered my question well enough.

I have personally seen an Iraqi take 5 9mm to the chest and proceed to try and wrestle the guy down the shot him. The only reason there were only 5 in him is the POS Berretta had a FTE. The dude got treated by our medic on site and medevac'd out and lived. I haven't seen someone get shot by a .45 but I imagine it would go differently.

Oh yea, but remember he was using standard military FMJ ammo because its illegal to use anything else. Maybe some hydrashocks would have been a different story.

My take is:
Capacity: Higher capacity is a very arguable reason, I don't care how good of a shot you are when someone is shooting at you and your adrenline is pumping and your shaking your not going to be able to shoot as well. Sometimes it will take alot of bullets to take down a cracked out BG. + 9mm
Stoppingpower= a myth there is the .45 will not stop someone dead unless you hit the right spot, which is true for the 9mm. Though the .45 will have a better chance of bringing someone down so +.45
Follow up shots: The low recoil of 9mm will make you more accurate and get your follow up shots faster and more accurate. +9mm

It comes down to personal preferences, my favorite round to shoot is .45, but i just traded mine for 9mm why? Cheaper to train more, higher capacity, plus a hollow point +p+ will come close to a hot .45 load. Every modern round has its place in the world, it comes down to personal preference and what you feel comfortable. Vigilant training matters 100 times more than caliber, the best shooters and most hardcore swat/military will all have different preferences. Find out what you like and shoot it.

.45. By the time you're into hotter 9mm +p+ loads, you're getting more recoil anyway. Plus, you get the added advantage of the size of the .45 cal and it's weight.

And, yep, I shoot 9mm, too. But for defense, it's real 10mm...not the FBI lite crap...or a .45.

Depends on the application. Inexpensive target practicing.....9mm. A round I can count on to totally "F" someone up.........45acp. As far as capacity is concerned. Yes, more is better, I will not argue that. How could you? BUT, if you are TRAINING often like you should, then you WILL NOT need a but load of rounds. I train on a weekly basis with ALL of my pistols........yes, even mah 9's, but when it comes to my primary carry weapon it's almost always going to be a .45acp.

The key is TRAINING.....not target practice! Real, under stress, realistic action shooting. If you are fortunate enough to own rural land I suggest you set up a small training course and run some action drills. At my house I have built a small course consisting of various walls, targets and obstacles which recreate some of the possible scenarios I could face in a day to day setting. We often switch up the drills to keep it fresh. We almost always use a stopwatch just to add that factor of pressure and competitive drive. Each wall or obstacle is a different checkpoint from which we move to and fro in various order. We have numerous targets in different positions that we shoot at from the various checkpoints. In this course we will shoot at 10" - 6" metal plates from 25yrds - less than 5yrds. During these scenarios we incorporate mag changes and deliberate jams. We also run the course with our carbines. You wouldn't believe how much better of a shot I've become under these conditions.

Uh.....back on target here. The .45acp is the clear winner for me.........but it dont make a difference what you carry if you ain't prepared to effectively use the dang thing.
