Hiring now...

I heard one time that about 1 out of every 10 people are worth hiring and about 1 out of 50 are worth keeping. In my experience in running crews (about 27 years), this isn't far from the truth. Some of my best workers are under 25, but that isn't typical. They have no problem working under direct supervision but when you cut them loose, that's another story. As a project manager/foreman, you have to be constantly building the confidence, skill, and work ethic of you techs...but there has to be something there to work with.
Yes you are right. I should have added the part where I am with them all day, bird dogging their asses. That part is very true. 1 out of 50 worth keeping? That seems a bit thin, but everyone has a different experience. I’d say 1 out of 50 becoming any type of leader. Maybe even less… I am an easy one, though. I remind them of this all the time. I can be hard, but many JW’s don’t have my patience. When they go to another job they have to tighten up even more and be consistent for the new GF…I predict that very few, if any of my crew will wash out. I shuffled guys in and out until I got who I needed, so I’ve been fortunate there. When these guys rotate out to other jobs it will be back to the drawing board for me.

Sounds good. Good on you for being a good leader
I try to be. I’m just not a jerk. I can be if I see someone taking advantage, or if they are dishonest with me, but they usually get a second chance. After that it’s on them. I dealt with jerk leads on a power trip when I was young. I never want to be like them. I can be a ruthless hatchet man when pushed, though, and my crew has seen it first hand, so they know. LOL

I understand. It's hard to find a happy median

So it’s like the next logical step after you get tired of the 9 volts on the tongue? I’m in!

I am currently trying to fill a couple of positions with my electrical/low voltage company. I am looking for employees with basic electrical knowledge, the ability to understand blueprints, use electrical test tools (multi-meter) and bend conduit. We are a traveling company, e.g., we work all throughout the southeast, generally on a 5/2 or 10/4 rotation schedule. All travel expenses are paid, per diem is paid in advance, all travel is done in company vehicles, my techs generally stay in Hilton or IHG properties. Pay is commensurate with experience.

If you know anyone that may be interested, please pass them my information. Thanks for your help!!!!
