Holy beef heaven

Real Kobe beef is actually now available in the US...

I was fortunate to have a real kobe steak at one of the few places in the us that had it, shortly after the "ban" was lifted. It's absolutely unreal. Crazy good. And 19 bucks an ounce, so it should be. Chops downtown has their certificate of authenticity for their real kobe on their website

Are you sure it was real? It has not been available in the us until last year and then only in miniscule quantities.
before that it was unavailable. http://www.forbes.com/sites/larryolmsted/2012/04/12/foods-biggest-scam-the-great-kobe-beef-lie/
From what I gather from this Forbes article it's only being served in a very few select restaurants.

From the article:
" According to Daisuke Terao of Japan Agriculture, “Right now it is not being sold at retail in the US – there is no way for individual consumers to buy it.” In 2013 two more authorized distributors received shipments, American Meat Company and ITOHAM America. “If you find Kobe beef for sale in the US from a company other than these, you know it is not Kobe beef,” said Miyanishi."

I love good beef and yeah I'm jealous of any good steak but I could never see paying $200 a pound for meat.

I was on Sam's Club's website checking brisket prices and apparently you can special order Kobe (or was it Wagu?) beef. The 12ish pound briskets in the vacuum sealed packs are around $70 right now but the special order Kobe brisket was $99. Not that big of a difference.

Check out the website. Their certificate is there, proving authenticity. They even mention that they're one of the very few that have it. I'm certain what I've had in the past was authentic. Chops even advertises that they have both americanized kobe and real.

Wagyu is not necessarily Kobe. Wagyu is a type of cattle. Kobe is one particular variety of Wagyu, raised in one area of Japan, according to a strict set of rules. Thus, all Kobe is wagyu, but not all wagyu is Kobe.

Wagyu is really good. True Kobe is the best. It's almost a shame to cook it. Slice it thin and the high level of fat makes it melt in your mouth.

People have been creative with their terminology over the years to "fool" people. There's a whole list of things that must be present, grade wise, lineage wise, etc to prove authenticity. But only relatively recently have places been able to import true japanese kobe, which if I understand, only comes from one particular japanese breed of cow.

Yep these things are true. But my assertion that chops has it is absolutely correct. You can compare their certificate, and those of other restaurants, with the official criteria to prove it to yourself.

Since Kobe beef is so rare and expensive, Guess I'll have to shoot some Kobe venison this year :)

If I had to guess I would guess Sams club is playing a little fast and loose with the truth.

I think I may owe you an apology, and have myself gotten confused in this whole issue. I'm not positive anymore that the chop's variant is actually the full on real deal. While I'm sure what I ate was, it wasn't at chops, and after researching I'm not sure I'm right about them. Lord I'm confused. Suffice it to say that both are really expensive and very good. My apologies if I've misled.
