I grew up where volunteer departments are the norm; that hits a community hard.

Sounds like the little town I live in. After you have passed 10 houses you're out of town. All volunteer fire department is all we have.

The cool thing about this volunteer department is that it is huge. Loudon County is just outside DC and extremely wealthy. It's my reference when paid departments belittle the service of the volunteers
