How often do you reach for your nightstand gun?

Only once in my life. I was in high school and my parents had left my younger brother and I at home alone so they could go to some company party one night. We were in our bedrooms at the back of the house when I heard a really loud thud from the kitchen. I heard it, but nothing followed so I paid it no more attention. Then it happened again....and then again. And the next time I heard it, glass was breaking along with it. I assumed someone had broken in the kitchen window. As I was going to my younger brother's room to collect him, I grabbed Dad's 1911 from his bedside table and put both of us in his bathroom and called 911, dragging the phone cord under the door before locking us in. The whole time I'm hearing broken glass crunch underfoot, things falling off shelves. I was convinced someone was ransacking the kitchen and then, just like someone flipped a switch, while I was on the phone with 911, it stopped.

I don't remember how long it took, but it felt like an eternity before the blue and red lights showed up. After a few minutes, I heard one of them call out "Police Department!" and I responded that I was back in the bathroom. They told us to wait and that they'd come to us. A few more minutes go by and I start hearing laughing. One of the cops shouts back to us, "Boys, I think it's clear, you can come out." I left the 1911 in the bathroom and we made our way into the kitchen to see two cops in the kitchen with one of the windows indeed broken. A few cups and mugs were also in the floor, broken. And lying dead, in the middle of the kitchen, right in front of the fridge was a rather large bluejay.

the best we could figure, with the light on in the kitchen and it being dark outside, the bird must have thought it was attacking another bird, seeing it's reflection in the window and flown into with enough force to break it. It must have then freaked out being inside, flown and flopped around until it did an header into the fridge, snapping its neck.

I asked the cops to leave a note for my parents because I knew they would never believe me. They helped us tape a garbage back over the window and then left. The only thing my Dad was mad about was the fact that I didn't wipe down his pistol before I but it back. "Boy, you know you got that damn dragon's blood. You'd rust every gun I own if I didn't follow behind you and wipe 'em off."
How old were you and could you have used the pistol if needed?

Neighbor had a mountain lion on his camera last fall. It does make walking around at night around here a little more... froggy. Have yet to see rattlesnake. Of course now that I typed that....
It was my Grandmother in the desert with the rattler and Mt. lion. I've had coyotes try to hunt me down. Had one outside my house one night try to jump me. He found out real quick I was meaner than he was

Coyotes are the only reason I have hopped up in the middle of the night and grabbed a gun (and it wasn't my normal carry handgun it was a long gun in both cases .)

Both times I hastily slipped on shoes without socks, didn't bother to tie them, and went outside. And both times as soon as the door opened a crack I heard no more coyote sounds and didn't hear anything else the rest of the night-- they silently slipped away.

If I had more free time and didn't have to get up early each the morning,,,I think I might have built a little wooden platform in the backyard about 2 feet above ground level and gotten in the habit of sleeping out there with a suppressed .22 rifle next to my sleeping bag and maybe some old chicken parts for bait near the back end of my yard where it meets the farmers field 50 -75 yards away.

I don't really remember how old I was. 16 or 17. I had a truck, so probably a sophomore or junior? And could I have used the pistol if needed? Absolutely. At 16 or 17 I'd already had a decade of experience shooting.

Yea at that age you weren't a little kid

What things/sounds/events make you reach for your night guns?
Wife's digital scale beeps 3 times when it is used.

Door open alert from alarm system makes 3 beeps when any one of out 7 exterior doors is opened....

Laying in bed at 3 AM we hear the beeps....

Can't tell you how many times I swept the house before putting one and one together....happens whenever our larger cat, nicknamed ****head, walks over the scale.

And I thought the ole lady was backing up........That's the sound I make when my wife is backing up.......🤣You know I get the look....

3 times in recent memories.

1st time was to handle a situation with neighbors. Said neighbor got arrested for multiple felonies. Pled down but still saved a life that night. Didn't even have to shoot someone. And Holly Springs PD was professional.

2nd time a neighbor came into my land, in the middle of my acreage. I didn't shoot him, but apparently we can't be friends. Lol

3rd was the dang cat at 3AM knocked something off the sink.

I did for only the second time in a decade about ten minutes ago. I think I've been watching too much Netflix.

I was outside putting up a new security screen in the van windows and I heard something that made my blood run cold. I mean ice cold. I'm not easily spooked, have hunted and camped since I was a little guy. I heard a gutteral, hacking wretching sound like I have never before. It was about 75 yards away if I had to guess. Three times. Like some creature in a movie. I went in to retrieve my pistol with thermal sight but couldn't make out any heat signatures that wouldn't normally be there.

I am a little freaked out and that's unusual for me.
