Dear Mr. Hooker:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. I apologize for the delay in responding. My office has experienced a significant increase in the volume of incoming mail, but please know your concerns were taken into consideration at the time your letter was first received. I appreciate and understand your concerns and am grateful for the opportunity to respond.

I am terribly saddened by the loss of innocent lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. I ask all Georgians to join me in praying for the victims and the families affected by this horrendous tragedy.

I do not believe that bans on assault weapons or cartridges are the answer to ending acts of mass violence, nor will such measures pass Congress. As history shows us, the 10-year ban on assault weapons that was in effect from 1994 to 2004 could not prevent the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. The common threads running through these shootings are mental health issues. I believe that more effective and sensible solutions are those that focus on background checks and mental health care, rather than restrictions on our Second Amendment right to bear arms. I look forward to working for commonsense solutions that keep our children safe without infringing upon our Constitutional rights.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please visit my webpage at http://isakson.senate.gov/ for more information on the issues important to you and to sign up for my e-newsletter.

Sincerely,
Johnny Isakson
United States Senator

I expect the background check thing. Something WILL happen with background checks. I dont believe that it will be UBCs, but more along the line of adding a mental health component. I originally was for this idea, before obama signed those 23 EOs. I think thisbis gonna be where they get us. It sounds reasonable to most people to keep people with mental health problems from having guns. Not million dollar insurance policies, bullet taxes, weapon or high cap mag bans. To MOST people, those are unreasonable, and rightly so. However, after throwing theirselves against the political wall of all these things that wont pass, something reasonable, like keeping guns away from crazy people, will. I dont believ we have seen their real agenda yet. I think it is coming out slowly. I know for a fact that i will never go to a shrink again. Not after those orders. No fly lists, barred from owning firearms, possible detainment are just some of the good things that go to a shrink and be honest.

I received the same email also.

not good.

I agree, it seems like the writing is on the wall. The good ole days where we can buy without paying taxes or sell without a background check are numbered. I hope sites like the ODT can evolve or they will surely parish.

I'm not so sure they'll be able to get very far with the mental health stuff. "Crazy people" used to be thrown in mental wards. There was a lot of abuse, neglect, and basically wrongful imprisonment. The country got past a lot of that which is why mental health records are protected and not submitted to the NCIS mostly. Liberal CA decided they were going to submit mental health info and it took them a decade to work the kinks out and get that started.

Mental health is a huge problem and the country hasn't even started to fix it. I doubt we'll see it tied universally into gun control for a while. It might get proposed but it'll be challenged in courts for a long time.

UBC's are what I'm afraid of at the moment.

Got same email. Yeah the comment on background checks scares me too. Gonna have to call his office and let them know that universal background checks are unacceptable.

Obama did two key things with the 23 executive orders he signed. first, he appointed someone at the CDC to write a report about gun violence being a public health issue. second, he made it mandatory for doctors and psychiatrist to report any violent tendencies whatsoever, and made it punishable by law if they don't. so what's going to happen is violent tendencies are going to be tied to gun ownership and public health concerns. that is going to be tied into a background check system. so the next time you go and tell your psychiatrist that you're so mad at your wife you could hitter, that will be registered into the system in the repercussions will ensue.

that is what I am afraid of.
