I am new to firearms and need some ideas. Is it advisable to keep records of the items you purchased for your own use? I could see that keeping up with serial numbers, amount paid, ammo, caliber, type and estimated current value would be very nice to know for yourself. What is the best way to keep these records and keep the information private. I have seen some software on the net but looks like it is for dealers and I am only moderately computer literate.

Memorize it all. Just kidding. I write down the make, model and serial numbers in case I ever have to report them stolen. Current value changes due to regional issues, panic buying, supply and demand, etc. If you surf this site daily you'll get a good idea of current values (as well as hyper-inflated asking prices!).

Make, model, serial number, any identifying characteristics and pictures are good things to have. Basically anything you would want to tell the cops if you had something stolen. Price is largely irrelevant unless you were inventorying for insurance purposes.

I keep a pic showing serial number of every gun I own on a cloud service online. That way there's a record I can access from anywhere even if an active volcano opens up in my yard.

I don't keep purchase price info or where I got it from, only a replacement value for insurance purposes. I never want any problems that I've been accused of making a business of buying and selling without an FFL. Call it paranoid, but I know enough about what can be and is seized during investigations.

Keep a hard copy of make, model, serial # and digital pics for reporting theft or property loss. I won't be using a Cloud service for firearms for obvious privacy reasons.

I record the serial numbers and then report them stolen after I sell 'em.

This way, you may get them back one day...

I kid, I kid!!!!!

Pics and serial numbers are a good thing to have in case they are stolen.

put it all in a .PDF, ENCRYPT IT and store it in a online drive like google drive

if just write it all down and then I lose my home to a catastrophe... chances are, wherever I stuck that list is GONE. Store it online, secured.
