Knife vs Handgun... What would you do???

The term "redneck" is used in such an ugly way nowdays.
Jason, dealing with drunks is like dealing with very young children. The sober individual bears all responsibility.
You guys should have left, thanked your friend who owns the property for the opportunity to fish there but you will not be returning
due to his choice of friends and their huge lack of self control. Never should you have drawn your weapon. There was never any threat .
You might have put a boat paddle up side your dad's head for putting you and your kids in that position.
And by the way, If I had noticed you draw your weapon I would have considering drawing my weapon in defense of the drunk. Your weapon was a threat.
Seriously, I have a father who is a hot head ( assault & battery charges ) and has put us in harms way on more than one occasion. We stopped going out with dad because of it. Had the " talk" with him and got the expected results" @$$#!*&(^^%$%^$#@%@!&#%@#$%^".
Hopefully, it will go better for you and your dad. The good news is that you can use these experiences as tools with your kids.

i would have pulled up to the dock and got drunk with him. lol. j/k. im not so sure i need to come fishing with you jason.

I think it would have been easier to go fish somewhere else. If the law showed up even if you were free of all charges in the end it is still a headache missing work to go to court.

Here's my 2 cents,
(1) your dad put your children in danger and if you don't see that ... I understand you didn't have control of the boat, but my kids come first, put pops in his place (no one has more respect for his elders than me), but do not place your kids in harms way even if you have to hurt you dad's feelings.
(2) If you didn't like the guys cussing go to a different part of the lake. WHOLE problem averted.

I agree. No gun pulled. I would have brandished my cell phone and reported the drunk redneck behaving erratically and shouting threats. Would have also weighed anchor and found another place to fish out of earshot of the idiot. Would have also called the buddy who owns the dock and let him know he had a trespasser. Then I'd give my child a Ward Cleaver type lesson on how there are just some pretty sorry people in this world.

That's what I'd do now at age 49. 20 years ago, it might have been a different story. I've mellowed some with age.

Carrying a concealed weapon is for defending yourself, family or others who may be in danger of losing life or other harm.It is not intended for people to enforce their ideas of moral behavior on others. I'm failing to see the self defense motive in moving toward a hostile situation. My first instinct is to move myself and family out of harms way. If that is not possible, then it's on.

Too many folks are failing to see the part that I WAS NOT IN CONTROL OF THE BOAT......... IT IS NOT MY BOAT.... Me and my kids were put into harms way so I defended us..... I am always the first to leave a situation just to avoid conflict my dad runs with open arms into it.... I would have NEVER jump on the trolling motor and headed to a dock in the dark with my kids and a nut with a knife wanting me to kiss his hiney...

My mom and dad called our friend that owns the dock.. He also owns several houses on the point and a cabin in N GA.. Well one of the houses was vacant so they are spending the week where the incident happened... lol.. :p:D

I am not sure what I would have did but as far as i am concerned as soon as he pulled the knife and started waving it around your life was in danger and you had every right to do whatever it took to take him down and protect your famliy . However I never pull my sidearm until I am ready to use it 100% no questions asked.

Hmmmm....Drunk got humbled, maybe he'll remember it, maybe not. Everybody walked/staggered away with nothing damaged but pride. Jason issued an "attitude adjustment" without drawing any blood. Sounds like a winner to me!

He would have been fine pulling the gun AS LONG AS he can convey that he was in fear for his life. A drunk, around 10' away waving a long knife and actually saying he is going to cut someone... Jason, you would have been fine.
