NRA Lever Action Silhouette Matches. Smallbore and Pistol Cartridge Matches this Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Brock's Gap Training Center in Hoover, Alabama (Birmingham).

Time to shoot some steel. This shooting game is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding game around. We have men, womens and kids at the matches. It is a family sport that all can enjoy.

Lever Action Silhouette is shot "offhand" standing unsupported on the clock with open sights. No scopes, no bench rests, no laying down, no shooting vest, no running, no gunning, no nothing. Just old school shooting. It is you, your rifle, and your ammo trying to knock the animals off the rail.

Safety meeting 8:30 am, practive 9:00 am, smallbore match starts 9:30 am. Pistol cartridge match will start after the smallbore match. Alabama time (slow time).

Course of fire, both matches:
10 shots at chickens - 40 meters.
10 shots at pigs - 50 meters.
10 shots on turkeys - 75 meters.
10 shots of rams - 100 meters.
40 shots total each match.

There are 2 groups of 5 of each animal at each of their respective distances. The shooter has two minutes to fire 5 shots (plenty of time), 1 at each of the targets from left to right (Don’t shoot the wrong one!). A hit is a hit (animals fall off rail) and a miss is a miss; only 1 shot at each target. This course of fire is repeated at each of the banks of targets, for a total of 40 possible points per match.

The small-bore rifle can be any lever action, pump or semi-auto rim-fire rifle (No bolt actions rifles), .22 long rifle ammunition only, hyper velocity ammunition prohibited.

The pistol cartridge rifle can be any lever action rifle with a tubular magazine. A rimmed pistol cartridge must be used, i.e. 25-20, 32-30, 38's, 357 magnum, 38-40, 44's, 44-40, 45 Colt, 45 long Colt, 22 magnum, 22 long rifle.

Rear sights may be open, receiver, or tang sights, mounted as originally intended. No extended mounts are permitted. The front sights must be a post or bead or a fixed, non-magnified round aperture. A front sight anti-glare tube, which may be no longer than 1 1/8” to include any attachments and no larger than a ¾” outside diameter, may be used. No scopes or red dots. Just old school shooting, just like the cowboys did back in the day.

Any cartridge causing target damage or deemed unsafe may (will) be banned. Steel animal shape targets are not cheap. Eyes and ears protection is a must along with an open bolt indicator.

Binoculars may be used for spotting. Spotting scopes or stands may not be used. No heavy/thick leather or suede vest. (i.e. hardscrabble vest). Vest are subject to pipe testing at any time. Gloves are allowed for very cold weather only.

Enrty fee is $12.00 first rifle and $2.00 for second rifle.

Brock's Gap Training Center will hold Lever Action matches on the first weekend of the month during February, March, April, May, June (Alabama State Match), August, September, October, and November.

Hope to see you there.

I see rain forecast for this Saturday...are the shooting points covered?

And thanks for the post OP, this sounds like a great event!

I like this. I wish it were closer.
It's great to have a competition for sporting rifles that are field-grade, not tricked-out and every expensive competition rifles.
Although if I did it, it would be with a match-modified Ruger 10/22, assuming the hood around my globe front sight is not longer than 1 and 1/8 inch. It may be closer to 1.5, going from memory.

Time to shoot some steel. Break out the lever action rifle and have some fun. Also we don't dress up and we don't use funny names in lever action silhouette.

Picture of pigs at 50 meters. Turkeys at 75 meters. Rams at 100 meters.
