Licenses for Bicycles? Seriously?

Hell, I think it is awesome idea. Maybe keep some of those butt-heads that think they own the road out of my way
Thats not the point... I agree with you but youre missing the objective here. They are restricting everything we do one by one slowly. Tax this, tax that, tax everything...

I really don't have a problem with doing something about bicyclists that endanger motorists.
1. They ride on both sides of the streets.
2. They ride on the sidewalks.
3. They aren't required to have insurance.
4. They can't maintain minimum speed for the free flow of traffic requiring motorists to pass in oncoming lanes.
5. Running stop signs and stop lights because they can't unclip their foot from the pedal.
6. Street shoulders aren't in good enough condition to allow bike riders safe clearance.
7. No license required.
8. They don't pay gas tax. Okay, okay, that's not a bad thing but it still pisses me off.

Care to add your complaints because I don't think I'm alone in this.
Number 5 pisses me off so bad! They are supposed to obey traffic laws as if they were in a vehicle...

cyclists cause accidents by being in the way, the exact way a pedestrian does.
if a cyclist swerves and hits you walking, you might get hurt. ouch.

vehicles swerves and hits you walking... dead.

thats why we have stronger requirements for vehicles.

I get that. I suppose I'm still trying to figure this out
a Motorized Vehicle can kill by virtue of the vehicle OR human error.

Seems to me cars kill by human error. I'm trying to understand the bolded part.

I still do not see where additional taxes would make them safer. I guess we could tax ammunition and guns as well since they can be dangerous to others.

Agree. Taxes are not the answer. I feel enforcement of existing bicycle friendly laws would solve most of the problems. But since we don't have enough officers to camp out and hunt spandex, the riders should hold themselves to a higher standard of conduct.

Oh I agree. I don't think we should subsidize anything like that.

We have mountain bike paths near me. The Local Mountain bike group....collects money from the group and people that use the path...to pay for the path. Thats how it should be. But if they forced anyone in the area witha mountain bike to pay, even if they didnt use those trails, it would be a problem right?

Its the "Who would build the roads?" "You didn't build that" nonsense... They'd be built, by the people that want to use them.

The Cyclists, just like you, pay too much in taxes for the road already.
Ummmm I think you've answered your question in your analogy.
This bill does NOT force any bicyclist to pay that doesn't use the roads. It clearly states it is only for bikes that use public roadways. At public parks that have mountain bike trails, the general public pays for those trails NOT just the bikers. Do you have an issue with that?
Georgia has the LOWEST 'pay for use' structure on roads in the entire country. I suppose based on your statements the public road ways therefore should be equally available to all, regardless of their chosen mode of transportation? Car, bike, tractor, foot, or horse? I'd rather them fix their funding structure.

There is a somewhat interesting table at this link http://www.uiowa.edu/~ipro/Papers 2006/roadfunding012307.pdf I suppose it is why Georgia, relatively speaking, has a very nice roadways.

Funding Roads: [/FONT]
On average, states raise 38% of their road funds from fuel taxes and 22% from vehicleregistration fees. Bonds make up 18% and the remaining 22% comes from other taxes and tolls.Dependence on fuel taxes range from a low of 5% in Georgia to a high of 69% in Arkansas.Dependence on vehicle registration fees range from a low of 3% in Georgia to a high of 55% in
Kentucky.

Amazing to see how so many people are eager to accept yet another tax. First off if we were actually demanding our tax dollars were spent AS THEY SHOULD BE instead of wasted through fraud, every road would be free of potholes, bridges would be fixed, and we would have bike lanes.

I am a cyclist (both road and mountain), and I always obey the rules of the road because I do not want to killed. What some of you do not understand is the reason cyclists spread out is because car owners do not follow the rules of the road and go 3 feet around the cyclist. I cannot tell you how many times I have had a car blow past me by a few inches at 50+ mph. Or when the rednecks in the trucks decide to "mess" with me when I am alone on a country road.

If I could get a 100% guarantee my money would go to add cycling lanes to all roads, then I would gladly pay some tax, but I am not paying yet another tax so some useless politicians can waste it.

This is why I just stick to mountain biking now :)
