I inherited a M1 Carbine. I’ve been trying to find more information on it, but there’s a lot of variables. From what I can tell, it’s made by Inland and the serial number suggests it was built in 1944. The confusing part is the barrel is made by Underwood with 1-44 stamped on it. There’s also an exploding bomb stamp under the Underwood and 1-44.

I have read that the Underwood barrels were put on later imported models and less desirable.

I’m trying to figure out the value of this one. Any help is appreciated.

Your carbine went through rework at some point after manufacture and the barrel was likely installed then. The rear sight is not original to the rifle.

Barrel might have been replaced early on due to damage, or may have been done during rework. It is a mixmaster like the vast majority of US surplus guns.

I own one but I'm really not into shooting it. I could take it or leave it. For the cool factor I kept it and will keep it. Last summer I went to the range and shot my M14 bleeeehhhh I listed it up the next day. It was a no fun gun to shoot. Cant put my finger on it but it just wasnt for me.

Totally disagree. I think it is historic that every industry from a Jukebox manufacturer to a typewriter company supported the war effort.
Carbines replaced pistols, I would rather carry a carbine in combat.
Audie Murphy carried one several times. http://looserounds.com/2019/09/09/audie-murphys-m1-carbine/
