Only if you put a heavy priority on recoil control and overall weight of the kit. In all other aspects it falls well short of the 7.62x51.
Frankly, I do like the modern AR in 5.56 and it would be a toss up if I would grab my AR or my M1a if going into combat, but I do recognize the AR would have a shorter accurate range and less capability to just break ****. On the other hand, it is lighter, more maneuverable and I can put more rounds on target faster with it.
In my original post about which I think is better, I took into account civilian and sporting use of the weapon. In that case, the M14/M1a wins easily.
You think the M14 has seen more civilian and sporting use than the AR15?
