M1 Garand is the greatest rifle of all time

Only if you put a heavy priority on recoil control and overall weight of the kit. In all other aspects it falls well short of the 7.62x51.

Frankly, I do like the modern AR in 5.56 and it would be a toss up if I would grab my AR or my M1a if going into combat, but I do recognize the AR would have a shorter accurate range and less capability to just break ****. On the other hand, it is lighter, more maneuverable and I can put more rounds on target faster with it.

In my original post about which I think is better, I took into account civilian and sporting use of the weapon. In that case, the M14/M1a wins easily.

You think the M14 has seen more civilian and sporting use than the AR15?

also, please stop calling it a M1A. It is a M14. The M1A1 is a Thompson machine gun. **** Springfield armory inc for calling there cast receiver Korean M14 piece of **** an M1A.

and **** them for calling themselves Springfield armory.

I say if you love it...own it... Just because I have a former army buddy who beat a somalian to death with a garbage can lid doesn't mean I'm gonna trade in my Rubbermaid..... I know if the price of .308 doubles, my ptr is going to be in concrete at the end of my driveway and i'm gonna put my mailbox on it....

I have an old friend, who was 5th special forces group in Vietnam...he hates the m16.... opinions vary....

Find an old ww2 vet and take his hand and lay a kiss upon his cheek... He thought his garand was heavy,,... yet he carried it for all of us... Merry Christmas brothers..

No. It certainly has not seen as much use as as AR15, but that doesn't mean it's not a lot more capable. It just means there are a crap ton more AR15s out there. There is simply no comparison between the .223 and the .308 for big game hunting.

As for the Springfield M1a, all I can say is that mine has been 100 percent reliable and is a legit half minute rifle after spending a couple of hours with Steve Edwards, so... :noidea:

We just disagree about what makes a rifle good.

Don't dismiss the AK just because it's simple and fires an intermediate cartridge. The attributes of the AK family are why they are still in such widespread use today. It's accurate enough at typical ranges, the 7.62x39 caliber has good hitting power, flexible platform adapted to many variations (PK in 7.62x54R), has 30 rd capacity, easy and cheap to make, rugged and reliable in adverse conditions and so simple a 12 year old girl can use it. How is that not a good rifle?

Is it perfect for every long range situation you can dream up? No of course not. But look at the impact and influence it's had. It has to be a strong contender in this discussion.

Perhaps you have a bias against it, because it's not 'Murican?

Easy and cheap to make? Apparently not without slave labor and government subsidies. If it was easy and cheap to make we would have good American made AKs.

Love my Garands more than any other rifle I own or anything that's out there today but lets be serious, it was the greatest rifle of it's time but it can't compare with the offerings of t he modern era!
This is my thoughts as well. It was revolutionary but the best part of its resume may be Patton’s endorsement and being used in WW2. Don’t get me wrong, that may be enough, but it’s still a 10lb, 8 round, iron sight rifle. Surely no one would rather carry that and a bunch of heavy 30-06 ammo over an 8lb, 30 round, optic equipped AR in 556.

No bias because it's not "Murican". The primary reason I don't like it is because it simply isn't accurate enough. I've owned and tried to like several of them, but when the rifle won't let me to put rounds on target where I want even as close as 200 yards, it's junk. Hell, I have three 9mm carbines and all of them are more accurate than any AK47 I've ever fired. Two if them are stock Rugers. I'm simply not a spray and pray kind of guy. I know there can be exceptions to this poor accuracy, but they are exceptions, not the rule.

As has been already stated in this thread, the only reason they are so wide spread is due to the Soviet Union's attempt at global influence, not because they are a good weapon. In the hands of an untrained Skinny in Mogadishu, they do what they were designed to do, but that's about it.
