Out of the blue, by niece asked me to go magnet fishing with her (guess her mom or my brother isn't interested) and I've not been.

I see "kits" on Amazon but they have mixed reviews. Are the rare earth magnets okay for this or should I use something less prone to cracking?

Thanks for any insights/experience you care to share.

just bought a, supposedly, 250lb magnet from Harbor Freight for about $20. Came with a screw in eyelet to attach rope to.
Used it to pick up all the nails that the roofers left. Strong pull, just dangled it over the ground and the nails jumped on.
Scratched my carry getting it off the magnet.
Definitely keeping my eye out for local places to dangle it.

Ive seen the law diving around Johnsons Ferry before. Maybe the river close to town. Around the bridge or maybe the park. Low river seems like a good time though. I doubt that it has lowered much.
I saw an old school cash register in a deep hole in a creek once. A heavy magnet would have helped.

There are good/better/best kits on amazon. Depends on quality and strength of the magnet and the rope. Use the gloves, they help. Try out a decently reviewed one first. If you end up going again and again upgrade. It’s fun. Never know what you’ll find
