I thought, and I might be wrong, that the box and its contents were Federally protected property of the USPS and the addressee only, for the legal use of the 2 parties only. That's why a third party can't stuff ad flyers in mailboxes, USPS wants you to pay the postage on the items.

Not supposed to, considered part of your home.

Garbage cans are not covered though.

That is once it’s abandoned to the garbage company. While it’s just sitting there is different.
