Manual transmission. Need to learn ASAP

Get on a flat level surface, don't touch the gas, just ease out on the clutch until you can drive away from a stop without stalling. Once you have mastered that, start feeding in the gas. Big problem is people trying to get on the gas before they have learned the feel of the clutch.

I'm going to try that on my way to work today, should smooth out starts.

Have you ever been on a motorcycle? And do you understand the basic concept of a manual trans as far as knowing why you shift and why you need to shift? If you know all of that then you should pick it up really quick.

Congrats on being a real man and lieing on the application so you coukd get the job haha this has got to be a funny situation for you.

I have attempted to drive a stick car before. It went reasonably well. Since then I learned to ride a motorcycle and got that down very quickly. I think I would pick it up in a car without any problem now

Also, I didn't lie on an application! It never came up, but I don't want to look like a fool if it is necessary one day

The only difference between a car and a bike is the transition off the clutch. A bike is easy and forgiving while a car generally isn't, it will die on you. Once you get the hang of it it is a piece of cake.

Thanks for the replies and the generous offers if I were closer. Y'all are awesome!
It might come up, might not. But it's something I think every guy needs to know how to do too.

I'm not thinking I'd ruin any clutches since I have the bike mastered and figure I'd have a much easier time now. The .22lr ammo is more of a 'thank you' than payment, haha!

Most important thing to remember when learning to drive a manual:

DONT THINK ABOUT IT.

The more you are thinking about it, "is the RPMs high enough? is this the engagement point? am i releasing the pedal too fast?" YOU WILL MESS IT UP.

The less you think about it, the easier it will be. Dont try to know exactly what your feet are doing, just do it. I have taught 2 people using this phrase, and it works.

Once you know the basics and had a little practice... if you are still stalling then you are thinking too hard.

You used to be able to go to an arcade(dave and busters) get in a car/truck driving simulator and choose an automatic transmission or stick.

Never met anyone who couldnt drive a manual transmission.DJD

I have, plenty of times.

My best advice is to sell or trade your current wheels for a car with a manual transmission. You will master it quick. I haven't had a car that wasn't stick for the past 10 years. People complain about driving it in Atlanta traffic and it has never bothered me and I actually prefer it to an automatic. In regards to releasing the clutch at idle, my TDI will let me go through the first three gears without touching the gas at all (granted it isn't accelerating much). My ranger on the other hand wouldn't be able to pull itself along at idle much less take off at idle. Just doesn't have enough torque.
