Maybe a dumb question

Seems like .300 is the new go-to for suppression. If I wasn't ever gonna use a can, I'd go 6.5cm or 6.8spc. If I was looking for something non-nato that is. I think the .300 has similar velocity in supersonic, but holds more energy further out.

Been mulling this over in my mind also. Im just hesitant to get away from nato rounds for some reason.
Supersonic 300 doesn't even come close to the same velocity as the 5.56.

Simple decision. If you want reasonable capability out to around 600 yards go with the 5.56. If you're happy at 200 yards or less, the 300 does fine and gives you the potential for good suppressed performance.

Folks, they have done just about everything that can be done with the 5.56 case. The simple truth us that the heavier the bullet, the slower it's going and the shorter the practical range regardless of caliber.

I agree with it to a point. My point is I'll spend money on quality everytime versus cheaper cost that will marginally perform the same job. Give me the DD over the half priced build because of parts quality on the cheap build. But some folks dont see it that.
Of course. I’m only saying that there are more options than just “high end”. I never once said “go cheap”.

I read 2550 with a 90gr for .300 and 2750 with a 77gr .223, thats pretty close I guess. I did get the info from Wikipedia, but thats about as far as I cared to go...

Both of those bullet weights are pretty close to the extreme for each caliber. One high, the other low. You seldom get optimal performance when pushing the limits like that.

Look at the velocity for 125 grain in the 300 and 62, or even 55 (3240), grain for the 5.56 and tell me what you think.

I completely agree, I was just saying you could get flat performance out of a .300 if you wanted to. Its the best for cans, but you can get fast target rounds also. Seems versatile.

I dont have one, but I've scratched the surface as far as research goes. Not in depth however.

Not really. That 90 grain bullet in a 30 cal is going to have a very low BC and is going to slow down much faster than the same weight in a smaller caliber. So, not as flat as you might think. Also inherently less accurate.

Do you think it would be better to build a .300 purposefully for a can, and occasionally shoot light target rounds if you wanted?

Or try to get 5.56 slow enough to be an effective suppressed round. Im genuinely interested.

I guess its more of a barrel and twist rate issue at that point.

Wow 7 pages. Thats a record for me. The reason I asked is I don’t know anything about 300. I really never considered it until I saw a DD for $1200 that I thought was a good price for the brand as to what Ive seen. I like to buy quality in every thing I buy. Learned a lot here. Thanks. Still on the fence with this.
