* Military / Law enforcement Personel *

"Major Battle" & "Victory" is subjective and there's no list defining what "Major" is. Take LZ Albany in the Ia Drang Valley, if surviving it is considered victory, then yes. But invariably, a major American unit was overrun and disengagement was the end result. The movie justaxposes LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany. Battalion movement to Albany is the second time 7th Cav was invariably overrun enroute to LZ Albany. This isn't attributed to the individual soldier, but to leadership..and the decision to do a battalion sized movement thru the jungle to Albany after a decisive engagement at X-ray.
Military doctrine still includes the lessons learned from that. The 'mad minute' is still taught when securing a perimeter or conducting an ambush.

I have one. That's why I didn't have to go into the military, I was smart enough to get into college.

They drafted me 6 weeks after HS graduation not caring how smart I was, after serving 2 yrs they paid my 4 yrs tuition and expenses plus a check also. I had no student loans hanging over my head and had 4 yrs of partying, I had a very nice lifestyle. THATS what I call smart !

I'm in college with a 3.7 GPA, and guess what, I got the military to pay for it, while getting experience. The military has some of the greatest minds in the country bro.

I agree. When I look back at what my peers and the men I lead have become (I got out in 97), I'm quite amazed and humbled. Several served with SFOD, a few A-teams, hell, my dumbassed rommate became a doctor, a few lawyers, authors, some are still in as Sgt. Majors, 3 star Generals.. I went to college before I joined the Rangers, it was then I realized I didin't know crap about anything beyond what I read in a book. I didn't know what I was capable of until I actually confronted with the need to do it. Life's challenge of getting up in the morning, driving to work..hanging out in a cubical or fixing the plumbing ..yes, those are challenges and not to be subordinated, but it's a whole different set of circumstances that no average person can truly understand when you're hooked up and the light goes green and you know everyone on the ground hates the living piss out of you and wants to kill you when you hit the ground. Life's experiences teach you more about yourself than sitting in a library and reading about other people's experiences.
