MOA vs MIL

Why are we arguing about this? It’s math. It’s black and white. MOA is a finer adjustment. Shooters and their rifles can’t hold the .11 difference. Dont convert anything to inches, just keep your thoughts in MIL or MOA. Anytime there is an adjustment to your input (distance, temperature, humidity, atmospheric change, bullet construction, velocity, etc) you will have to make an adjustment in your optic to hit your target. Change to input = change to output. There is no way around it.

Some people just want to extol their superior knowledge and intelligence.

And make sure everyone knows it....

When I'm sighting in a rifle I measure with my reticle MIL or MOA then make that many clicks. It's really not that difficult guys.

Don't worry about inches or centimeters just know what scope you're using measure how far you're off in the reticle and adjust.

If you're an idiot that bought a cheap POS scope with MIL turrets and MOA reticle or vice versa, well, you're just an idiot.......

I've got a 30 year old Leupold that is Mil dot with MOA turrets. When I bought it no one I knew had even heard of Mils, much less target turrets. There was no internet so I looked through sales brochures for two months to find a Mil scope, and it cost $50 more than the heavy barrelled Rem 700 I put it on. That scope is still clear today, and the adjustments are solid and precise.

I actually don't mind the Mil/MOA. The scope is only 10X power so I can't see those .30 caliber holes 300 yards away anyway. Once I go look at the target it's easy for me to think about adjustments in MOA. Most of the "sight in" targets are inch based as well, so even with a spotting scope I've got the inches that are easy to convert to MOA for zeroing purposes.

For holdovers and range estimation I've still got the Mil dot reticle.

It would be different if the scope was higher power or if I had a spotting scope with a Mil reticle. Or better yet, a spotter with a spotting scope with a Mil reticle.


My biggest concerns with the cheap, usually 2nd focal plane Mil/MOA scopes is: at what power is the Mil reticle accurate, if any? Do the turrets really adjust in MOA, or just MOA-ish? Will it hold zero?

I mean, you can figure out how far it moves per click (if it repeats) assuming it will hold zero. But if the reticle isn't accurate, then why bother with having a "Mil" reticle anyway?

Man am I glad I unsubscribed early and didn't get drawn in!! MOA = Measurement of America! <-Love it since this is a discussion of SAE vs Metric system which was not intuitive to me and the reason why I asked how people thought when using the mils measurement. USAMU rules! -Out here!
