Gonna paint it with high temp BBQ paint?
Yes sir.
I've realized that regardless of how well I paint that firebox with that paint, it will always come off. I read on a smoker manufacturers webpage that the only paint that never had peel/ flake was the paint used on the space shuttles for re-entry and it was like $500+ a gallon.
Yeah iv seen that stuff they can keep it ....mine will be rusty before I spend 500$ a gallon. i know a lot of people don't strip the scale off of the steel before they paint, that's why I sandblasted everything and will sandblast again when it's done and ready for paint. I also plan on heating the whole rig up and get all the moisture off the steel and spray the high heat black while it's cooling down. If that dosn't work at least i made an honest effort
What about header paint for cars on the fire box? I think it has a higher temperature rating. You could always do an oil finish, do a quick google search on it. You can use anything from canola oil to motor oil. I picked it up doing ornate iron work. It makes a really nice durable finish that won't burn off. Kind of like an iron skillet.
