My afternoon

They had a very wet lighter that they eventually got working. They also had my new "survival tomahawk" that my brother got me for Christmas. They used the para cord to help make a shelter. They had drinks but they were washed away with their food. Talking to him last night he explained that once they realized they were stranded they decided to plan ahead and set up a camp rather than waiting. The water was very cold and they needed to get warm and dry. While exploring the island they found a handleless machete blade in a stump. Other than that not much.
We found one of the kayaks today but there's no way to get to it until the water slows. Maybe, just maybe we can get it before someone else does.
They (and you) did a great job. I'm really glad everything is ok. They will learn from this and tell that story for the rest of their lives.

An adventure indeed. Thank God everyone is safe as from the sounds of it, there were many more ways it could have gone very wrong than right. As you suggest, perhaps this was in the end a very good thing to learn now vs later. Whew... sleep well dad.

this may help next time. there is a class 4 rapid on that stretch of river, also look up some ditch kits (survival kits in a small waterproof bag that goes with you when you flip the boat)
