None of my rails have heat shields. They might heat up during a carbine class or if left out on a really hot day but I'm not doing mag dumps so I haven't had any problems.

We ran 500 rounds suppressed through an M16 last weekend with non heat shielded free float hand guards. Heat on the rail never became an issue.

A company called Unique AR-ARs makes the spider rail specifically for Spikes and they say a heat shield is not really needed but you can get one if you like. Check out their web site. I run my main AR suppressed, so it heats up quicker than normal.

Shoot it a lot especially if your gonna consider this your SHTF rifle. After actually using it a lot unlike piecing together what you think works well you may find things you dislike, need changing, or that make it not so reliable.

Could be small stuff, but it would make a difference if you would be potentially using this tool extensively.
