My son is joining the Navy this year after graduation. His absolute favorite rifle to fire is my M1 Garand. So, I'm doing some research and I'm going to pick him up a "Navy" 7.62 chambered M1 Garand for his graduation. He's going into their Nuclear Engineering program.

Congrats to your son and thank him for his service to our Country for me! When I went through boot thats what we were issued the M1 Grand, did not see an Ar or Ak until Nam.

Best to your son and his choice of Naval Nuclear engineering --
Not sure if the navy 7.62 garands are now re-barreled or have chamber inserts -
There was a bit of bother with the inserts and i believe the last were "threaded" in --
My rifle in boot camp was a 1903 springfield -- no sense wasting needed garands on sailors when they were needed in korea --

Navy M1 are not that common and are pricey.

I do have an M1 a buddy built for me in 308 great shooter (new criterion barrel).

The Navy MK2 Mod0 had the inserts, for a shooter you need to look for a MK Mod1 which is a chambered 7.62 barrel. They are a real joy to shoot, if I see one for sale I will let you know
