I used to do off road triathlons, mostly on road tho, and I wouldn't get a full suspension bike unless you are willing to spend a few thousand dollars. The cheap ones are heavy and extremely inefficient with the energy yo u expend to pedal the bike. The bike bobs up and down instead of applying the energy to the back wheel. Good ones are not to be had for anywhere near less than a grand.
I recently bought a bike for my 12 year old son from Performance Bicycle in Roswell. I don't see how anyone can compete with their price and selection. I spent less than $500, and his bike would certainly be good enough for me to hit the trails. Stay out of the big box stores. They basically sell Highpoints, super heavy bikes. Stay out. And I would 100% buy a bike only if it had disk brakes.
I bet there are some awesome sales going on. They have a huge web business. When I was racing I spent lots of money with them. Great value.
