This could go on for a LONG time.
During Vietnam, I was a 14 or 15 when 2 of the seniors go busted for breaking in to one of the guys fathers gas station and stealing the cash. Couldn't have been more than 50-60 kids in the whole school. Judge said Army or jail. Both went to Vietnam. The one who's father pressed charges bit it within a month or two. The other guy made it, but was screwed up so bad he couldn't make even the simplest decisions for himself. Last I heard, he's still that way. Scuttlebutt had it that this guy, who was like 6'5" was assigned as a driver for a big wig. Supposed to have shot a little kid who was running towards the Jeep. As I said, it was scuttlebutt, so no telling if it was true. We all get screwed up with our experiences, can't see why anybody would feel good about lying about anything.
I was stationed at the Navy hospital in San Diego in 79-80. It was an open bay setup. Had a Marine who always talked Nam stories. All the other guys were around his bed listening to him, but I had work to do. There was this old man they found on a bench in Balboa park they didn't know what to do with, so they admitted him. He told me, "If he talks about it, he wasn't there." A couple days later, a bunch of admin types rushed in, and rolled him out, bed and all. Turned out he was a WWII Marine Corporal, MOH recipient. Can't remember his name, but he had the numbers tattoo, so he was also a POW. Someday I'll figure it out.
