Need place to go shooting!

I took my brother and best friend to gunsite hills recently. Worst range experience ever. He pissed us off bad enough we just packed it up and left early right in front of him. I won't sit there and let someone make false accusations against me, my brother, or my friend to my face.

The next day while thinking about our visit my brother did some math and we realized we shot one round every five minutes. We never hit a target that wasn't our own, but we were told we were shooting the other guys targets and we're going too fast and not communicating impacts.

Does that sounds like something that would be done by a former army sniper, an eight consecutive time marine expert rifleman, and a competent shooter who has been trained by the previous two?

I don't know what has happened to Mike. At one time we were friends and he even made me a range officer there. I even held my best friends Bachelor Party there. But the last time I went he immediately pissed me off so bad that we never even got our equipment out of the vehicle. I left and have never returned.

He has always been a little eccentric, but with a great sense of humor and a really nice guy. Now he's just rude and mean.

The thing is, when we got there the three of us got along with him just fine. I'm used to eccentric. Hell, I'm kind of eccentric to some people. The whole time we were shooting everything was going fine, then out of the blue he starts in on me about being essentially a careless shooter and he pissed off the three of us to the point we said **** it, we're leaving. Never got my LR308 sighted in, which was the last of six rifles we were zeroing.

It seems that once he thinks there is a problem, nothing you do or can show him will make him back off. The primary issue he had with me was that he thought I was only going to pay him for one shooter because I was going to be doing all the shooting, though I was going to be getting come ups on my brother's rifle for him. I was going to pay him for two shooters and told him so, but once he was pissed there was nothing that would stop him. He became petty and accused me of other BS to try and justify the fact he was mad. The only reason I told him that I was going to be the only shooter was to let him know that we didn't need two benches. I was trying to be polite.

Dementia is an issue that you can not overcome when faced with someone that unknowingly is affected by it.

Old saying "You can't reason with unreasonable people".

Sad to hear about the trouble with this range as I was going to take my son there and enjoy some distance shooting, but I can tell by the info provided here that even though I was a LEO Firearms Instructor and Range Master this fellow would be trouble and ruin the most important thing about the shoot, being with my son.

Wow! Sounds to me like there's a bit more going on than "eccentric" with this guy, and doing this to friend as well. Personally, I try to stay away from "eccentric" people, particularly when there are lethal weapons around.

Agreed. I been considering going there to. Thanks for saving me the trip. There is a place in Royston that is $100 per year. Only 200 yards but the owner there doesn't much care what you do. Nice guy. Just don't shoot at the chicken houses.

I'm only 15 minutes from Royston. What's the name of the place?

I have been a member at Elbert County Gun Club for about 4 or 5 years now. I go during the week, and typically have the range to myself. There is a separate rimfire range, pistol range and a long range (400 yard) range. Then there is the shotgun stuff (multiple station with electronic launchers and another kind of shot gun range - but I am not a shotgunner....) $120.00 a year are the dues. There is an IDPA shoot on some Saturdays and in the newsletter, some of the guys to to a place called "Gaines" range (?) and am told that it is a 1,000 yard range (I have never been to it).

It is worth at least checking out their website and see if it fits your needs. It is nothing like having to go to Gunsight Hills, where you feel as if your neck is being breathed on by a guy that "says" he is a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer (submariner), and you surely dont have to climb that steep hill after returning from resetting your target. At Elbert County Gun Club, there is a well maintained gravel road to one side of the range so you can drive to your respective distance. Club managers and volunteers keep the place spotless, and there is also a club house.

Now, dont get me wrong, at one time (several years ago) there was some politics going on but all that has settled, and in my opinion, it is well run. I do not go there for the politics, but I do go twice a month just to have 1 on 1 time with my guns.
