So I've got a treeing walker coon hound that came from the humane society. Her instincts to tree are really amazing. The problem is, I'm not a coon hunter and I live in a subdivision. Of course, when we got her, we had no idea if she was trained or just how genetically predisposed she might be to do her job. Tonight, for the second time since we've had her, a raccoon found its way through our cat door and into the laundry room - needless to say she went full coon dog... The coon is long gone but I can't convince her of that (her English sucks). So my question for anyone in the know is - what is the normal payoff when a coon dog does its job? Is there anything I can do scratch her itch?

P.S. - don't let me down. I told my wife and daughter that the ODT is the fountain of all knowledge and would have all the answers.

That sounds like it was fun. :pound:

This one is a little outside my expertise, but it's my understanding that "worrying" the coon (mouthing and playing with the body a little) would be the payoff for the dog. I could be wrong about that, but it's common with other types of hunting dogs like hog hounds.

Since you don't have a dead coon, you'll just have to let her wind down. Of course, because the scent of the coon is in the house, that could take several days. Good luck!
