I have a nine month old English Coonhound. Very similar to a Treeing Walker. I also live in the suburbs. Coonhounds are happiest on the hunt to appease that innate desire. As I like to squirrel hunt, I am training him to tree squirrels. We do this walking the neighborhood every day we are not in the woods. I have a long retractable leash. When he see a squirrel, I get close enough so he can tree it and bay. The neighbors actually love seeing it and hearing him sing. More importantly, I also train him to break off a chase. A training collar helps a lot. 99 percent of the time, the warning beep and a verbal command does the trick. Praise and treats for desired behavior. I also have squirrel tails on a string attached to a stick that we use as a toy. He loves to chase it. This seems to allow him to scratch the hunting itch and chills him out.
Coonhounds are incredible, but consistent training seems to be essential. If you are going to have him off leash, I highly recommend a tracking collar. I use a Garmin.
