Rifle choice is simple - M1 Garand or M1 Carbine. The ultimate in reliability with historical significance thrown in for good measure in ubiquitous calibers.

Pistol is a toss-up between a S&W 686 like LH said. Or a Colt 1911.

S&W Model 686 in whichever barrel length you wish.

Stainless finish is durable enough to not be afraid to use.

Nice wheel gun, would get my vote. My dad gave me one when I got out of high school, a S&W model 28-2. No mine is not engraved, but I have used this gun from hunting to if I had to defend the home front. But what ever gun you give him, I would bet he will be Happy just because you gave it to him! Good Luck. Oh yea, I have had my S&W for 36 years now......Ray

Thanks.. appreciate the story too. My dad gave me a Remington Nylon .22 when I was very young. I grew up taking that thing everywhere. It was the only gun I ever had that just didn't have a big enough price that would make me sell. Unfortunately it was stolen out of my truck several years back. I found and bought a black one identical to it but it just isn't the same.

Unfortunately my wife is not the gun enthusiasts that we are. One gun is as good as the next to her.

Have you considered a double barrel shotgun? SxS or O/U would be a personal choice, but either is a classic design that can be used for many different hunting scenarios.

Yes a I have and your right. My son does love to wing shoot and skeet shoot. Something along these lines could be a prized gun that still gets used.
