I'd buy a classic, and have it tastefully and inconspicuously engraved. Maybe a nice Smith 19, 66, 686, or if he's in to autos a high end Sig.

- Colt Python (if you can afford it :-) )
- S&W 686
- Buy a second set of nice wooden grips and have them laser engraved with something personal/meaningful and put them on
-- That way you have a "presentation" gun and a shooter combined

My son will graduate high school next year. I have always thought I would give him a nice engraved weapon on that day. I have an idea on what I will have engraved but 17 years later I still have not decided which weapon. My son grew up hunting with me and of course he already has the basics. .22 rifle. Shotgun. Deer Rifle. He is not a beginner and is familiar with all platforms and calibers.

My dad was an avid hunter (as was I) and (competitive) shooter. That made me a very fortunate son when it came to big boy toys. While I treasure every firearm he ever gave me, and I had a collection beyond all of my friends at an early age, it was when I opened the Smith model 27, that I knew he considered me an adult (regardless of what the law said). S&W Model 686 in whichever barrel length you wish.

Stainless finish is durable enough to not be afraid to use it, but cleans up easily to be a 'show-off' piece.

This. It was my pick after the second sentence in the OP. I'd go with a 4". There's plenty of other S&W's that would work great also though. Revolvers have been around since the 1800's and they will be around for a very long time to come. Smith makes the best right now so it's an easy choice.

If I were a 17 or 18 year old boy getting an engraved gun for a gift, but knowing that it's going to be a working gun and not a safe queen to only be handled with white gloves on a padded table, here's what I'd be looking for:

1-- A gun that's old school, of the type that is being phased-out due to economics and manufacturing costs or the whims of the marketplace, but NOT because clearly better designs are on the market.
A 1911 is an old school classic. So is any revolver. Colt or S&W double-action revolvers would be tops on my list, although a classic Ruger Single Six with a long barrel would make a nice hunting gun or hunter's companion / back-up gun. I would stay away from modern polymer-framed semi-autos. They're useful and practical, but not classy. For rifles, the wood stock is going away, being replaced with plastic / composite / polymer. I think a classic hunting rifle with a nice wood stock and semi-glossy finish would be a great gift. Remington 700? Ruger M77? Winchester Model 70? Weathrby Vanguard or Mark V? (I had a Mark V, but I sold it because it was too pretty to actually drag around the woods!).

2-- Another idea is to get something with a threaded barrel and buy him a silencer for it! A silencer or sound suppressor on a gun is a really cool feature, and useful too. It's not something most young men can afford to get on their own, but they DO appreciate them and enjoy using them. I have silencers and write NFA trusts for people who want to use that route to get silencers, short barreled rifles, etc.
