I didn't think you could use a VPN with Netflix.

Yes they started their VPN ban a couple of years ago, but many VPNs are beating it now, and you just need to switch servers if you get a proxy error. It's BS actually. I use a VPN for security purposes, and this isn't about downloading unpaid content.

Laptop with an HDMI port, plug it into the TV.

I can watch an entire season of "Bottom".

Nope

You are using it to watch content that you and Netflix do not have the United States streaming rights.

It does not matter what you think, but what your contract with Netflix and international law says.
