I made my choice with caliber based upon platform and the performance I could get out of the pistol and caliber. So I ended up with 1911 in .45 and snubbie revolver in .357 magnum. My back-up is a NAA Blackjack in 22mag that is pretty wicked for it's small size when loaded with Hornady Critical Defense.
Protective Measures had it right, focus on what works for you. A gun on your person that you have confidence in is better than the cool gun left at home.
That is why I don't use .40. I feel or think that I am inherently inaccurate with the round so I don't use it.
If power in a semi auto is what you want some of you guys need to shoot my converted Range Officer in .460 Rowland. It is a pistol you can carry, it holds 8 + 1 and it has the power of a approximately a .44 magnum. I use it now b/c it makes my old 1006 10mm look like a pansy. It is costly to practice with though so it is a back-up during hunting trips and a companion to
my Colt Python when I'm taking a "walk" in the "woods".
Find what works for you and get really proficient with it. Afterwards, worry about getting the cool stuff and trying out new guns and calibers.
