Oil & Filter changes are cheap ~ Engines are expensive.

Are you at least getting something in return for having a relatively scarce version of a Toyota truck? I'm not sure I'd want to take a financial hit just to drive a configuration of a popular vehicle that was made in low numbers. That doesnt' really make much sense to me.

Return? I plan to drive this truck for at least another 10 years, so the return on my investment is huge and rewarding. I get the pride of ownership, the joy of driving something special that I have made my own and the comfort of having no monthly car payment... makes perfect sense to me.

That all makes sense, I was referring to this:

One of the reasons that I continue to put money into keeping this truck on the road is because of it's rarity, and of the 2,202 built I don't know how many are still on the road.

Preservation of a rather powerful rarely seen low production Unicorn that is a blast to drive. I don't expect it to become a true collectors item in my lifetime, but I'm doing my best to make sure at least one is still on the road 10, 15, 20 years from now.

I have an 06 Double cab. When I bought it I told my son it was our truck. Well looks like I will own it for about another 2 years as he will take over at that point. I just had the hood and bumper painted recently. My wife asked me to either get it painted (rock chips on the hood and fade on the bumper) or buy a new truck. I dont know what Ill buy next but Im happy with my Tundra.
Heck I hope to get it back when he goes off to college if thats the route he takes.

Those regular cab 5.7Tundras were pretty quick, from the factory! The 3.4,4.7 & 5.7 are arguably Toyotas best truck engines ever. Why they went to a TTV6 after 2019 boggles my mind! Anyway, I lost my 2007 tundra earlier this year(lady pulled out in front of me) that had 265,000 miles on it and didn’t use,or leak,a drop of oil. Everything was still great, transmission and everything. Only thing I had done to it was had to replace the starter, which I’m glad you’re doing all the small stuff, while you’ve got this one out/apart! Holy **** are the starters a PITA :( I would rebuild/replace the trans while you’ve got it apart…just to save labor down the road ;). Good luck, looks like you’ve got a solid plan & great mechanic working on it.!

I have two running, paid for trucks and still can’t drive due to seizures !!
Pisses me off to no damned end - that and I am a mechanic by trade as well. Can’t work. Did most of the last few years on my own so I have no “disability” to speak of that gives me any kind of check.
Thank God I have a good wife that works hard and helps me.
With the daughter grown and gone, our house paid for…we are still what I am considering blessed !

I just can’t bring myself to get rid of my trucks ! Lol

Sorry for your loss of the '07.

The transmission is this truck was replaced at some point before it hit 270k, my mechanic re-flashed the shift memory about 30,000 miles ago and said it was good to go. Level10 makes a high performance transmission for these trucks, so that is a possibility if the need arises.

Damn!

Are you old enough to file for retirement benefits?
I will probably file for mine after my upcoming birthday.

Hang in there!
