Opening day of elk rifle season, Grass Range MT

I usually use Weatherby 307 in .280 Ackley Improved, but this year I’m using a SIG Cross in .308.

Seems like you'd have to thread a needle with that pea shooter. I call it a pea shooter because what you're hunting with it. Seems I remember you talking about taking that. Have you taken elk with a 308? What do you think about the 375H&H for that? I just don't want to have to chase them down........For miles........

I guess if you're using a 280, the 308 should be fine. However the 280 would probably be better for pronghorn. The 308 seems light for bear and I'd think elk

308 is plenty for any North America game. Especially if you know what shot placement is and how to do it. Lol

Oh I can thread a needle. Or at least used too. I just don't like tracking them. I like a good heart/ lung shot. Granted there are other ways, but that's what I like to do. At least on the game he's hunting. Bear is goin through the nose or eye into the brain

If you can thread a needle, you aren't tracking them far.

.308 is more than enough. For 80 years the record for a Rocky Mtn elk was a bull shot with a .30-40 Krag.

Last year, my buddy’s wife took her nice bull with a .308 at 250yds. He walked 5 yards and dropped. Bullet went through and through, and wasn’t recovered.

Gotta remember, folks are taking elk with bow n’ arrows.

This bull was taken on this property a couple months ago with a bow. He went no more than 100 yards.
