Please don't thank me for my service???

I think there was a lot of guilt in our country after Vietnam and how Soldiers were treated. I never got upset or bothered when someone thanked me, more like shy or hesitant. I tried to explain to people that I enjoyed my service and that was thanks enough. It's kinda like someone thanking you for being honest. Really not necessary, but if it makes you feel better, do it. Soldiers are used to it now and can deal with it. They might not always like it, but it comes with the uniform.

I'm always nice when people say thanks but on the inside I feel embarrassed. I didn't join and deploy to be thanked. I did it because it was/is the right thing to do for our country.

I was going to write a freaking book in this post about this but you summed it up pretty good so I'm going with your response.

Embarrassed is good, proud is better, but joining "was/is the right thing to do for our country" is best.
Sorry to embarrass you again. Thanks for your service brother.

I'm proud but don't solicit any thanks. I did it for the same reason... I'm a red blooded American and at 17 I wanted to be like my grandfathers. So I joined.

My sentiments exactly.

I never deployed even though i was set to. I have been thanked before, didnt have a response really and still dont. There are far more deserving men out there than i am, but in and out of uniform i will still uphold the pride and values instilled with it. I will simply pass the gratitude on if i get the chance
