Please recommend a dog for waterfowl!

Actually.....

Standard Poodles were originally bred as water retrievers and they were good at it. Some still are. The stupid haircuts come from their hunting history, too.

They were bred to have very thick coats to help protect them from the cold water, but the coats got so thick they were slowing the dogs down. Hunters started cutting away the coat from areas that were not vital to keep warm while leaving it where it was needed. That was the first "Poodle Cut". They may look foo foo, but I've worked with some that were seriously hard boys. I've also seen a couple that did impressive personal protection work.

That’s awesome, I didn’t know that

The dogs hunt on land and in water from Wisconsin to the Dakota's and down to Texas everything from geese to pheasants. Cold water is not a problem.

Pointers can and will do the job just not like a lab will, just like labs can and will hunt upland birds but not like a pointer will.

Like others have said get you a lab pup from a good hunting bloodline and you will be happy.

Agreed labs are one of the best for this purpose. Just an option and his dogs are like machines when working.

I never had Labs, the few labs I have seen they mostly super friendly wagging tail to everyone. I'm terrier owner. Do labs ever bark to strangers or when someone approaches fence, aka do they alert?

It depends on what you teach them. I have had 5 of them, they would alert, no problem. But were friendly if thats what I wanted.

Yes, most of them do, but it's just an alert. Once the person enters the yard or house it's all about "pet me!!!"

That's not true of all of them. Some couldn't care less that you're there and others will take your head off if you enter unescorted. Though both of those are rare.
