Something to consider is there's what, 40-50K members here and this thread has only gotten 800 some-odd replies, an multiple posts by the same members.

I'd pay. It is worth $10 a year for this audience when you have something to sell. If I don't sell frequently it is still worth $1 to post an add to me. Small price to pay to sell your stuff to like minded people who understand the value of your items like you do.
Something else to consider

Whatever system you initiate should be extremely low maintenance for the admins, and low complexity for the user. For example, I very rarely bother anymore with any site which demands the captcha photo selection "find all the photos with a blade of grass, a car, and a decapitated alien head" horse **** in order to post. Or, a check box that if accidentally left unchecked when posting an ad throws an error and deletes everything I've already done.
The buck a month certainly wouldn't scare me off, nor would limiting the posting of ads to site supporters only, but becoming a PITA to use would irritate me away in a heartbeat..
Next up - dealers. Usually when the pay wall comes up, so do the special incentives and special perks for dealers/businesses. As a regular old guy who sells/trades my own stuff from my own collection, the idea of competing against dealers for 'air time' for my ads to be seen isn't appealing.
I'm good with whatever reasonable non PITA solution is implemented.

I am somewhat bemuse by the number of so called conservitive folk here that advocate price controls --
Yeah, but half that 40-50k members are cops, BATF, Secret Service, etc...
ATF, maybe a handful. Cops and secret service have better things to do..
Its not about price controls so much as wanting to keep the forum from being overpriced crap deals...
