Private School vs Public School

Absolutely. And I’d much rather them learn that at 7 or 8 than 27 or 28

I'm still gonna take her out to the woods, take her shooting. Plus I'm not soft on my kids.

Yes, they still will be soft, and that is the biggest thing I have to fix outside of any schooling. However, it is much easier to fix the soft myself than to teach them Algebra 2 and how to code in Python myself.

My first four kids went to catholic private schools for 12 years, my youngest son goes to North Georgia Christian Academy presently. I feel I’ve given my kids the best education I can afford. Having put all the time and money into their education I’m hoping they will remember this before they push me outside into the cold in my wheelchair smelling like ear wax and piss.

Mine are in public school in Macon, which are pretty bad. The wife and I have talked about doing private school but it's more than a mortgage payment per kid, so it's out of the question for now. New superintendent here has started turning things around though so who knows it may be better in a few years.

The problems with public schools are twofold.

1. Often a lack of quality. Many (not all) of the teachers are utterly incompetent and are protected by the unions and system in general.

2. Liberal indoctrination. Those same unions and system are overwhelmingly liberal and most of the teachers believe it's part of their job to "educate" the children in proper liberal thought.

If your child is going to a good public school, the quality of the teachers is rather good and it's easy to pick up the slack for the poorer ones at home. As long as you are involved.

On the other hand, the battle against the brainwashing needs to be constant. Be ready for some rather interesting parent teacher conferences.

My parents pulled me out of a rough public High School about as soon as I started going there. I was held up for my shoes, there was a shooting out front, tons of fights, a real DeKalb County shining example of M-to-M bussing success.

I went to a smaller private school and it likely saved me from getting into a lot of trouble. I graduated, then went to GT and eventually graduated from there.

That said, my kids go to APS. I have paid close attention and we have been really happy with our particular elementary school, but that is where the difference is made, parent involvement.

People complain about the gentrification in the neighborhood and how it is unfair, but when we first started going to PTA meetings, there was hardly a crowd and barely a budget. Now, it’s a packed house, and the fundraising is at record highs.

Do what you think is best for your kids. In my situation, public school was a war zone once I hit high school. An alternative was necessary and appreciated. For my kids, they are getting a good education in a public school where we have great community involvement. I plan to stay active in the school, pay attention to the atmosphere, grades, and faculty. If things go sideways in middle or high school, I’ll do what I have to...
