Just received my Laminated M44 in the mail from SOG, when I spoke to them I asked for good wood and good bluing the warehouse guy I spoke with said they had a nice 1945 he'd send. The problem is, I'm not so sure what I've got. I can't find a factory stamp on the receiver or a date.

Here's what I got:

The rifle is 100% matching
The stock is 85%+ that's me being picky
The bore is brand new
The bluing is 98%+ almost unissued.
The rifle was virtually free from cosmoline

What I don't understand:

Where is the date stamp on receiver?
Where is the factory stamp on the receiver?

I just find it odd to not be marked

Update: since taking it apart, I checked the date under the tang and it's a 1944 Izzy. I just find it odd that the receiver is smooth with the exception of the serial number, not even a hammer and sickle.

I talked to a couple of guys that are on the milsurp forum. The general consensus with both of them is it could have just missed that step in the factory. They both mentioned bare M44's before....I didn't expect it to be anything special, hell it could've been factory scrubbed for all I know. I just thought it was weird.

This is the official response from Ted at 7.62x54r.net

"I've heard of unmarked rifles before. It probably just got missed during production. Serial numbers were marked separately from the rest of the barrel marks. It's an interesting anomaly.

Regards,
Ted"
