Question on .380 defensive ammo…. have you tried this stuff?

Honest question as it’s the second time I see this, and have an LCP Max. Why the warm weather carry ammo and then cold weather carry ammo?
I've found the 380 with Hornady critical defense ammo to be perfectly adequate with warm weather clothing that's the norm for the South East with regards to penetration and wound channel opening. But it doesn't take very many layers of clothing to go from adequate to insufficient. So I'm cooler weather where sweatshirts, coats and multi layers are the norm I swap to a hard cast to obtain as much penetration as possible in hopes of breaking skeletal elements or reaching a vital organ. Plus, I carry this pistol daily as a backup even when hunting. I've used it a few times to finish off deer that I was tracking for others and a few pigs.

Never thought about that. Thank you!

Yeah…. have watched a number of vids on the Lehigh and Underwood (with the Lehigh projectile)…. compared with the ARX ammos…. but have been interested if any of us on ODT had experience with it….

no problemo in Colt mustang (380), Colt commander (45) and bodyguard (380)
Mr. Wilson liked the performance of 'Underwood' ammo so much he bought the company... !
anybody that has built 1911's as long as he has, I am confident he has shot many different weights and bullet configurations to know what top tier is......... just saying

In the Commander, did you use the Underwood with the 120 grain Lehigh projectile? Been wondering about that one too….

I’ve tried several different ones but not that brand. The Speer gold dot 380 is best I’ve found for reliability and performance. Everything else I use federal HST but the 380’HST has feed issues in RUGER lcp for some reason. Also I polished feed ramps on my LCPs.
Speer Gold Dot Hollow Points tested in my Sig P238 penetrated 12" in ballistic gel and expanded reliably while retaining 97% (on avg) of weight. I recommend it.

Yes, it is the lighter one (1420 fps in +p) and BTW for those that don't know they are not designed to expand but they disrupt gel better than a HP and they don't get "clogged" up by layers of clothing etc... like HP's

Yeah…. been watching some gel test vids on those Lehigh projectiles…. they look pretty lethal, yet don’t appear as prone to over penetration…. and it would seem a good combo using the Underwood .45 acp in the 120gr…. my primary EDC is a 45 because of a desire for sub-sonic ammo…. in my recent thinking, the 9mm is too hot for areas with the chance of hitting something/someone in the background….

From all the ballistics results I’ve seen, Speer Gold Dot would seem to be the most reliable for both penetration and expansion…. the biggest problem with Speer is its seeming lack of availability to civilian population…. I almost fainted a couple months ago in the ammo section of Adventure Outdoors when I saw a completely LOADED stand alone shelf area of Speer with cases of .380, 9mm, 40 and 45acp! I’d never seen that before….
