Giving my sons 2003 ford ranger a once over. The rear tire has a little play in and out. Not front to back. What would cause this? Should I worry about it?

Moving to the front now

Pull up a diagram of the rear axle parts. If it is a "C clip" axle, a little in and out lash is normal.

If all OEM, it should be a similar set up as below (as Rangers don't have heavy duty, full floating rear axles).
I would check the tightness of the bearing retainer plate bolts just to be safe. A pressed on interference fit collar typically holds the bearing assembly onto the axle shaft but the plate is responsible for securing the whole axle shaft assembly in the housing, if it's a non C-clip axle.
