I’ve killed them just fine with my full choke turkey shells. If you need an excuse for the Mrs. To buy a new gun, just buy whatever you want but the 12ga will work.

I kill them in some thick stuff like below. The pigs likely don’t see you and you are just in their path vs being charged. I’ve never met a pig that wanted to bother me once it knew I was there.

If anyone cares, I found a Ruger Security Six, as well as a box of Buffalo Bore 180gr hard casts at the ODT show this weekend, both for pennies on the dollar. I had been investigating some 10mm options but the deal(s) were too good to pass up. $350 for the Ruger and $25 for the ammo. Problem solved. Thanks everyone.

It has happened to me a handful of times now that I have run up on hogs in the thick brush that I typically hunt in for turkeys in the spring. This always seems to happen when I am woefully underprepared, given the firearms limitations of turkey season. I have been charged a couple times and the old turkey gun is just not enough. Go ahead and call me a bad woodsman for getting myself into this situation, I get it.

Currently, the hottest handgun load I have access to shoot is a .38 spl +P from a 4" barrel. I don't own a whole lot of handguns unfortunately (but looking to change that being on this site ). In the emergency situation that I have to stop a charging hog (<300 lbs, in my area), do you think this would be a sufficient load? Or should I consider a much stouter cartridge/firearm combo for this job? Interested to hear from your experience or opinions. Thanks.

Glock 10mm pistols such as a G29 or G40. 10mm has become popular evening in Alaska for bear protection. If you go to hard cast lead bullets you need to change to aftermarket stainless barrels made for this (no need for boar and black bear). At 2x the muzzle energy of a 9mm and with 15 fast shots, you are about as good as you can get short of using a 12 gauge with special bear slugs. I say this as an owner of both soutions and having used them in Brown/Grizzly territory in Alaska. The S&W M&P 10mm Performance Center is super sweet with the integrated slide/barrel comp. No need to change the barrel if you use hard caste lead bullets. Love mine. A chest holster is your best placement as you can still get to it well if knocked on your back and is a good place to carry a large pistol.

6.8spc sbr I’ve used it for years with great success but Im not sure 6.8 will be around forever so I’m back to 77gr 556 for a lighter weight gun. I change guns all the time because I get bored
